“And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high” (Lk 24:48, 49)
No preacher can preach effectively without the unction, the anointing of the Holy Spirit resting on him like a mantle. A true preacher needs this Baptism of fire, gripping his soul, burning his heart and pouring eternal life thru his words.
Listen to the great man of God, E. M Bounds:
“Unction is simply putting God in His own word and on His own preacher. Unction is that which distinguishes and separates preaching from all mere human addresses. It is the divine in preaching. This unction comes to the preacher not in the study but in the closet. It is having distillation and answer to prayer. It is the sweetest exhalation of the Holy Spirit. It impregnates, suffuses, softens, percolates, cuts and soothes. It carries the word like dynamite, like salt, like sugar. It makes the word a soother, an accuser, a revealer, a searcher. It makes the hearer a culprit or a saint; makes him weep like a child and live like a giant. Opens his heart and disburses gently yet strongly as spring opens the leaves. This unction is not the gift of genius. It is not found in the halls of learning, no eloquence can woe it, no industry can win it; no religious hands can confer it. It is the gift of God, the signet sent to His own messengers. It is having His own knighthood given to the chosen, true and brave one who has sought this anointed honor through many an hour, tearful wrestling in prayer. It takes a divine endowment to break the chains of sin, to win estrange and depraved hearts to God, to repair the breaches and restore the church to her old ways of purity and power. Nothing but this holy unction can do this.”
(E. M. Bounds: 1835-1913)
O friends, get alone with God and shut yourself up with the Ancient of Days until you are endued with power from on high. It may take a week; it may take months but lay hold of God until He imparts his Holy Spirit upon you in a baptism of fire. Then you shall see the transformation in your preaching and in the hearts of your hearers! Souls shall be saved, all for the glory of God!
